Chen Hongshou, also known as Chen Mansheng, was a native of Qiantangjiang, Zhejiang province. Classified as one of the Eight Masters of Xiling, he was admired for his paintings of orchid, bamboo, and plum blossoms. While serving as an official in Yixing, he met the skilled teapot- makers Yang Pengnian and his sister. From them Chen learned to make the kind of purple-clay teapots Yixing is famed for.The plum trees in this work are arranged in a creative and balanced composition, and represent a natural and free style using the circled-petal approach. Small circles were made quickly with the tip of the brush to create the outline of the plum petals.
