Professional Development for Teachers: Exploring the Wonders of the Ancient World
Join Maryterese Pasquale-Bowen and Carol Hockett as well as faculty and staff from Cornell University as we use the Museum’s exhibition Wonder and Wakefulness: The Nature of Pliny the Elder to examine the ancient world from multiple perspectives. Inspired by Pliny’s encyclopedic interests, we’ll explore nature as both teacher and artist through the collections of the Johnson and Cornell Library’s Rare and Manuscript Collections. Readings will include both ancient sources and contemporary interpretations.
Guest speakers are scheduled to include Professor Don Rakow of the School of Integrative Plant Science; Fred Gleach, Senior Lecturer and Curator of the Anthropology Collections; and Patrick Stevens of the Rare and Manuscript Collections. Lunch will be included as well as campus site visits to the Cornell Cast Collection. The day-long workshop is open to teachers of all grade levels and disciplines seeking new ideas for their classroom.
Registration with credit is through TST BOCES Frontline. For more information or to sign up, email Carol Hockett at firstname.lastname@example.org.
