As in Hiroshige’s image of the Moon-Viewing Point, also displayed in this gallery, Kiyochika presents a view from one of the brothels or inns of the Shinagawa entertainment district. The full moon and its reflection in the water are partially obscured by mosquito netting, which serves to evoke the feeling of a still and humid evening. A paper lantern with decoration of the full moon and autumn grasses connects the scene to the Musashi Plain, associated in poetry and literature with autumn.
(“Moon,” curated by Ellen Avril and presented at the Johnson Museum August 25, 2018-January 13, 2019)
