Considered the most gifted student of Albrecht Dürer, Baldung Grien is best remembered for his innovative and often eccentric woodcuts (Grien was a nickname he acquired while apprenticing with Dürer, for his penchant for wearing green). Here Eve, though she holds the forbidden apple, appears to be the seduced rather than the traditional seducer. Baldung’s deft use of the woodcut line captures Adam’s wanton features as Eve seems to recoil from his touch. (“Imprint/ In Print,” curated by Nancy E. Green with assistance from Christian Waibel ’17 and presented at the Johnson Museum August 8 – December 20, 2015)
