In the 1860s, Kusakabe Kimbei joined Felice Beato’s studio as a hand-colorist, eventually becoming a photography assistant. Later, in the 1870s, he worked with Baron Raimund von Stillfried, and by 1880 had opened his own photography studio. He specialized in selling souvenir albums, and his talents as both a painter and photographer combined to create some of the highest quality Meiji-period images.
