Like his friend Whistler, whom he met in Paris in the late 1850s, Tissot was greatly influenced by Japanese art but in a more prosaic way, dressing his models in the accouterments of Japan culture while maintaining a very western approach to the composition. Tissot came to live in London in 1871 after fighting in the Franco Prussian War. While there, Seymour Haden taught Tissot the etching technique.
