How can we use students’ senses to enrich our exploration of objects and make our museum-based experiences more multisensory? Share touch-carts that introduce scent, sound, and tactile learning elements into in-gallery classes, from the rich floral scents used by Egyptian embalmers to the fibers, carding combs, and spindles of master weavers.
Our three-part series will tour Ancient Rome, Asia, and Europe. Readings will include ancient and contemporary sources, from the writings of Pliny the Elder to the latest research in neuroscience.
The first session, “Senses and Classical Antiquity,” will include the special exhibition Wonder and Wakefulness: The Nature of Pliny the Elder.
This workshop was made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
Registration with credit is through TST BOCES Frontline. For more information or to sign up, email Carol Hockett at cih2@cornell.edu.
A Zoom version of each workshop will be offered from 4–5PM. Teachers and other professionals can choose to attend the same workshop in person at the Museum from 5:15–6:15PM, with the opportunity to see the art in an intimate setting. Free parking at the Museum is available at that time.
