Marking the 2000th birth year of Roman author, natural philosopher, and statesman Pliny the Elder (AD 23–79), this exhibition will explore the reverberations of his encyclopedic Naturalis Historia (Natural History) through two millennia of art, culture, and natural science. Connections with various Cornell departments and collections will bring together rare books and manuscripts, casts after antique sculpture, coins, gems, and natural history specimens, as well as a range of artworks from antiquity to the present that engage Pliny’s interest in the materials and origins of art.

This exhibition has been supported by generous gifts endowed in memory of Elizabeth Miller Francis ’47 and from Deborah Goodman Davis.
