From 1959 to 1984, many zainichi (ethnic Koreans resident in Japan) were repatriated to North Korea. Thinking they were moving to a “paradise on earth,” the harsh reality they experienced compelled them to flee back to Japan, where they hide the fact that they left for fear of discrimination and other troubling consequences. Soni Kum’s three-channel video Morning Dew weaves together archival images, texts, and silences to artistically evoke their hidden stories.

This exhibition is cosponsored by the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies and the campus-wide Migrations Global Grand Challenge, part of Global Cornell, and supported in part by the Jarett F. Wait, Class of 1980, and Younghee Kim-Wait Endowment for Korean Arts at the Johnson Museum.
