Contemporary artworks in many mediums will look at the movement of people across the globe and the welcome cracks that develop in our notions of borders and nation states—which, Leonard Cohen sang in his 1992 song “Anthem,” is “how the light gets in.”

The works consider experiences and perceptions of migration and encourage visitors to participate in a narrative of empathy and responsibility. Artists Kader Attia, Andrea Bowers, Mona Hatoum, Hayv Kahraman, Elisabeth Masé, Driss Ouadahi, Mounira Al Solh, Ai Weiwei, and many more will address conditions of mobility, vulnerability, and the loss of and yearning for home.

how the light gets in will be on view in all of our temporary exhibition galleries, curated by the Johnson's Andrea Inselmann.
