Sumbawa court textiles feature gold- and silver-wrapped threads for their supplementary weft brocades and reflect the wealth of the island. Metallic threads were imported, and the motifs on many of these cloths refer to the prosperity gained from trade by ship. Worn for ceremonial occasions, the sumptuousness and expense of such textiles served to underscore the power and status of the rulers within the societal hierarchy.
