Notice—Forest (Breakfast Street) is part of a series that Yuken Teruya has been working on for several years. Based on photographs of trees Teruya encounters in his daily life, he painstakingly cuts out delicate tree shapes from one side of a paper bag and then suspends them by gluing them together inside the opened bag. Creating a sort of glowing afterimage of the tree, from which the paper bag was produced, the artist believes that there is still a memory of the original tree in the paper of these mass-produced, disposable fast-food bags. Subtly drawing our attention to the effects of consumerism and globalism, Teruya alludes to the depletion of natural resources and the disappearance of cultural traditions.
