A woman dressed in business attire struggles to remain standing on a wildly undulating lawn. The grass is green and the sky is blue with a few scattered clouds in a suburban neighborhood. The woman is wearing a white shirt, a red skirt, and high heels. Long black hair hanging down to her shoulders and bangs frame her face. As the woman can’t keep her balance and falls, we don’t know what is going on: Is the woman sick, or just plain drunk? Is it an earthquake? What is wrong with the camera direction? All we are sure of is that the video has an affect on our own sense of stability and equilibrium. What we are watching is Patty Chang performing in her piece Losing Ground. Influenced by early performance artists like Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, and Chris Burden, who used their own bodies to cross lines of acceptability, Chang is best known for videos that are based on mesmerizing and sometimes disturbing performances. Blurring the line between fiction and reality, the short film is a performance-based piece, for which Chang buried a waterbed in the ground and covered it with sod to get the effect of the lawn.
