Glassmaking traditions were already well established in Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia by the advent of Islam and subsequent commercial interaction of these cultures led to greater artistic exchange. Decorative schemes on early Islamic glass were achieved by manipulating the surface of blown glass; the geometric designs on this cup were cut using the same wheel also used for grinding and polishing.
