This commemorative tile, in the form of a mihrab, the niche in a mosque located in the wall that faces Mecca, is broken into two parts, with one line of the inscription missing. The inscription that remains, written in naskhi script, is translated as: “The master of this charity is al-sadr…the Honoured…al-Din Manuchehr ibn Mahmud ‘Izz al-Din al Na’ini in the course of the year seven hundred and twenty. May God forgive the one who will recite a fatiha for him.”

From the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, Kashan potters produced numerous tiles for funerary monuments. The inscriptions often refer to Shiite imams, reflecting the religious tolerance of the Mongol Ilkhanid rulers. Many such tiles appeared on the art market in the early twentieth century. This tile was collected by Lord Curzon, a British foreign secretary and Viceroy of India (1899–1905.) It remained with his descendants at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, England, until sold in 2002.
