The Johnson Museum’s significant collection of pre-Columbian art covers much of ancient Mexico and central and south America and includes ceramics, stone carvings, metalwork, and textiles. Areas of particular strength include ancient Ecuador and Peru, with representation from both coastal and highland cultures. Two major bodies of works, one from Peggy and Tessim Zorach given the 1970s, and most recently in 2006 from Thomas Carroll, PhD 1951, are chiefly responsible for this breadth and depth. The collection is used avidly by the Museum’s OMNI (Objects and their Makers: New Insights) school program, and studied by professors and students in the History of Art and Anthropology departments, among others.
