The second-largest portion of our Asian collection comes from Japan and fully represents its many artistic traditions. The ceramics collection ranges from Jomon and Yayoi period ceramics, to Edo-period tea wares and porcelains, to the bold works of ceramic artists active today. Sacred paintings and sculpture reflect Pure Land, Esoteric, Zen Buddhist, and Shinto religious traditions. Folding screens, scroll paintings, and woodblock prints feature the diversity of aesthetics and patronage during the Edo and Meiji periods, including works by artists of the Kano, Tosa, nanga, and Maruyama-Shijo schools, as well as ukiyo-e and shin-hanga. The Johnson holds a large collection of Meiji-period photographs by Japanese and foreign photographers working in Japan in the late nineteenth century.
