The Johnson’s collection of Korean art is on view in the Andrew Byong Soo Kim and Wan Kyun Rha Kim
Gallery on the fifth floor. The collection is particularly strong in ceramics, spanning two thousand years from the proto Three Kingdoms period through the Joseon period (1392–1910). From the first introduction of Chinese ceramic-making technology and improvements in firing techniques that permitted the creation of true high-fired stonewares, Korean potters developed their own innovations and aesthetics in ceramic production that were particularly influential in Japan. Widely admired are the sophistication of gray-green glazed wares, known as celadon, the unpretentiousness of buncheong wares, and the purity of Korean porcelains. Goryeo period metalwork and paintings from the late Joseon period to the present round out this growing part of the Museum’s collection.
