Indonesia comprises the world’s largest archipelago and encompasses many cultures, languages, and religions. The Johnson’s collection includes bronze and stone sculptures from Indonesia’s classical era, dating from the 8th to 15th centuries, considered the highpoint of Buddhist and Hindu patronage of temple arts. Later sculptural traditions are represented by woodcarvings made to adorn the architecture of the house and objects of metal and wood made for performance and ritual purposes. Javanese topeng (dance masks) and various kinds of puppets, such as wayang golek (made of wood and textiles) and wayang kulit shadow puppets made of painted leather, are particular strengths of the collection. The Johnson’s collection of Indonesian textiles has grown in recent years, with the addition of a large collection of Balinese story cloths, and ceremonial textiles from various island cultures.
